Press Release 2/28/22

LONG BRANCH, NJ – Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) announced today that Anjuli Ramos-Busot and Kai Mateo will serve as virtual guests to President Biden’s State of the Union Address to Congress on Tuesday. Ramos-Busot is the Executive Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club. She is a former climate change research scientist at New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection and now leads one of the state’s top climate advocacy organizations. Mateo is the Federal Climate Campaign Manager for New Jersey League of Conservation Voters. He is responsible for coordinating policy in the fight for strong federal climate legislation in Congress.

“We know that the climate crisis is here and that coastal states like New Jersey are on the front lines. That’s why I’m honored to invite two of our state’s climate leaders as virtual guests to President Biden’s State of the Union Address. Anjuli and Kai are exactly the partners we need as we work to pass legislation to transition to a clean economy and slash greenhouse gas pollution,” Pallone said. “I look forward to working with both of them to combat the climate crisis.”

Pallone will wear a climate pin during the State of the Union Address that represents the “warming stripes,” a visualization of global warming since 1850. The pin highlights the urgency for the climate and justice provisions of Build Back Better to be passed. As Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, Pallone led passage of key climate provisions in the Build Back Better Act that passed the House last year.

“This is our last decade to act. The imminent effects of climate change are already here, and massive climate action in these coming eight years is the only way to go in order to avoid more catastrophic effects and the destruction of our environment. We urge President Biden to continue his work on climate and to push for the whole-of-government approach with the Build Back Better package,” said Anjuli Ramos-Busot, New Jersey Director for the Sierra Club. “Congressman Frank Pallone has been instrumental in the Build Back Better work and in climate action here in New Jersey. We thank him for prioritizing the protection of our environment and for his leadership in ensuring that New Jersey receives the necessary resources from the Infrastructure Act to tackle climate change. Every action makes a difference, we need more Climate Action Now.”

“I am honored to stand with Representative Pallone at the State of the Union as part of the environmental community,” said Kai Mateo, Federal Climate Campaign Manager for New Jersey League of Conservation Voters. “Congressman Pallone is one of our nation’s strongest champions for environmental protection and is aggressively fighting to head off a climate disaster by supporting policies that build a sustainable 21st century economy. We look forward to continuing our longstanding partnership with Congressman Pallone, fighting tirelessly to realize President Biden’s environmental vision for our nation and seizing this historic opportunity to create union jobs cleaning up Superfund sites, replacing lead pipes, expanding electric vehicle infrastructure and turbocharging our clean energy sector, particularly offshore wind.”
