Thoms Mundy Peterson

WOODBRIDGE – The Historical Association of Woodbridge Township presents Gordon Bond on “A Token on the Freedman’s Coat” – The story behind Thomas Mundy Peterson’s 1884 Voting Medal on Monday, January 23, 2023, at 7 p.m. at Fellowship Hall, First Presbyterian Church, 600 Rahway Avenue, Woodbridge, New Jersey.

On May 30, 1884, citizens of Perth Amboy pinned a gold medal to Thomas Mundy Peterson’s coat in recognition of his vote as the first African American to vote under the Fifteenth Amendment in 1870.

Gordon Bond not only relates the background of this extraordinary event but places it in a broader historical context. This presentation is based on Gordon’s latest book, “To Cast a Freedman’s Vote…” which will be available for purchase and signing afterwards.
