Coughlin, Lopez Applaud $25 Million Investment in Preservation of Historic Revolutionary War Sites

Proprietary House Among Sites Receiving Funding

Press Release 12/6/22
TRENTON – As our nation approaches its 250th Anniversary and the celebration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, historic sites throughout New Jersey are preparing to welcome thousands of visitors eager to learn the role our State played in the founding of the United States.

An unprecedented $25 million investment was allocated earlier this month to support the revitalization of ten State-owned historic sites from the revolutionary period, including the Proprietary House in Legislative District 19. Securing funding for the renovations in the FY 2023 State Budget was an Assembly priority.

“The funding will help ten historic sites, including the Proprietary House, throughout the state restore, upgrade and begin visitor readiness projects to prepare for the semiquincentinnial anniversary of our nation,” said Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez (D-Middlesex). “The Proprietary House in Perth Amboy is the only proprietary governor’s mansion of the original thirteen colonies still in existence. Its part in history will be preserved and shared with future generations for many years.”

The organization, Revolution NJ, in partnership with the New Jersey historical commission and crossroads of the American Revolution, will assist in coordinating the restoration of the revolutionary war sites.

“New Jersey’s role in the American Revolution is unquestionably significant,” said Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin (D-Middlesex). “The Battles of Trenton and Princeton singularly re-energized the fledging effort at perhaps the most crucial point of the war. Today’s sizable $25 million investment in capital upgrades across ten critical, state-owned sites marks a big step in leveraging the full civic and economic potential of our state’s consequential revolutionary war history, not just in preparation for 2026 but for the years that lie ahead.”
