Presently, much of the time of the Council Meetings are taken up by individual grandstanding. The same complaints are being made by the same people. After attending several Perth Amboy City Council Meetings, I found myself both tired and frustrated over the same redundancies from the same old waxworks – the same questions, the same […]

Yes, Perth Amboy did have two meetings on the same day (May 28, 2014). The Caucus was at 4:30 p.m. and the Regular Council Meeting was at 7 p.m. This is normally not the case, but because of the holiday on the 26th, both meetings were held on the same day. The residents who always […]

It’s funny how things work out. Originally, last week’s editorial was supposed to be how we felt it was inappropriate for some School Board Members to be looking at their electronic devices during their meetings. We had suspected that statements read from their computers may have been prepared by someone else. During the 5/7/14 Board […]

Recently there was uproar at Rutgers over the fact that Condoleezza Rice was asked to be the commencement speaker. An uproar started by certain faculty groups, as I understand it. But God help you if she feels that you are only doing something to promote your own agenda and using students as a stepping stone for that purpose.

My late father, Rockwell Maxwell used to make a comment: “I don’t care if there is a joke at my expense as long as it makes someone smile.” I decided to devote this editorial to what makes me smile. This includes two- and four-legged animals. Whenever I visit the Massopusts, the first thing I say […]

The Core Curriculum Standardized Testing has been in the news lately. Some good news and some bad news. Lately there have been protests by educators and parents who feel that the Core Curriculum Program has done more harm than good. The majority of the time when I go to City Hall, it’s to cover municipal meetings and they are not always pleasant, but recently I had the pleasure of being there when Abraham Pitre was sworn in as the new Fire Chief. I was also present at the swearing in of former Fire Chief Dave Volk – and that, too, was a very joyous occasion.

People are elected sometimes by a large margin and sometimes they just squeak by. The bottom line is they are accountable to all the residents in the City no matter how big or small their margin of victory. This is why I was puzzled at a recent Perth Amboy Council Meeting. A resident made a […]
