2013 BAIT SHOP REPORT

PERTH AMBOY — We’re back! In the wake of Super Storm Sandy both American Pride Bait and Tackle shops were destroyed. Fortunately, the 211 Front St. location survived due to its cement walls and therefore, easier to rebuild in time for the 2013 season. Overcoming obstacles has been the norm for our little shops. We’ve endured almost everything imaginable from fire to water.

Our will is strong – our store name says it all. I’ve been using the word ‘’our’’ because my Sister and I have united to rebuild the business. It is very exciting for me; one store with the goal to succeed. Providing the best product and service.

There are many great and exciting things in store for this season and I’m very happy to say it’s definitely starting off well. The store has a new fresh look and fresh inspiration “A woman’s touch is always welcome.’’ We have extended hours on Friday we’re open ‘til 10 p.m. which is great for our customers that work late or need some extra time.

Now onto the fishing,

There are many reports of striper and flounder being caught off the beach and straight to the Parkway Bridge. Outgoing tide seems to be when most of the catches are being reported.

The shop is still waiting for its first official weigh in. Bring it in and show us your catch.

The shop is fully stocked with sands and bloods, clams, chum and bunker ala frozen.

Fresh bunker soon to come. We’re helping people with their registrations and renewals for both NJ & NY. It is a must if your fishing in saltwater. Avoid any fines it only takes a few minutes enjoy a cup of coffee while you wait.

Tips and Things:

Hooks: Hooks come in all sizes shapes and forms this is the time of the season when many schoolies (baby stripers) are being caught. We all need to release them with little to no harm so it is possible for them to grow and help populate the fishery. It is imperative. It will provide future fishing for us and our children. We all must respect it. Sadly, it has been many times I’ve heard the phrase “If it fits in the pan.” Its more trouble cleaning that poor little fish than it is worth.

We fish for fun – not to survive if your fishing to survive there is government help for that. OK, back to the hooks this time of the season we should be using circle hooks I recommend to use them all the time but now more than ever it is designed to catch the fish on the side of the mouth which insures a quick and safer release. Ask for them next time you go fishing.

On a different note this week a guest came in early and bought some bait. I asked him where was he going to try his luck? I’ve heard some great things along the beach side. He said “Oh, no I’m going out of town. I’m afraid to get mugged or something” I replied, it’s 6 am all the bad guys are still sleeping.

I said it to be funny, but truthfully, it bothered me that he really believed that. I told him I was born and raised in this town and loved it. I’ve fished from dusk to dawn on the beach countless times and never had a problem. Does this town have crime? What town doesn’t? Based on my 38 years in this city, you generally have to be involved in something negative to have problems.
