Statement by Perth Amboy Republican Chair

PERTH AMBOY – “While I applaud all efforts to eliminate all types of Voter Fraud, as I believe we must protect the freedom citizens have to exercise their constitutional right to vote, and protect the privacy of their vote, I also find it is very critical to balance these safeguards and follow a process by which governs us through law.

Although, I am the Republican Municipal Chair and these removals have impacted almost all of the existing Democratic poll clerks, I am empathetic to these individuals and submitted a complaint based upon my findings.  Specifically, I noticed that most of the Democrat poll clerks removed are experienced Senior Citizens (approximately 40-45 individuals), in addition to other poll clerks who also have the most experience working at the polls.  To my knowledge, these individuals impacted by their removal have earnestly done their job in a manner by which there have not been complaints, and were not removed by their new Democratic Municipal Chair, Martin Arroyo.  The law is very clear, in that, it is up to the Municipal Party Chair to recommend poll clerks of their respective party.  I find the action of not using a Municipal Party Chair’s recommendations, to be politically motivated.

In the Special Election of May 12th, we need to have a balance of experienced Poll Clerks (both Democrat and Republican) to ensure a fair, neutral, and honest polling place, free of politics.  Both Martin Arroyo and I have submitted complaints regarding this matter to the Board of Elections, and hopefully, through this bipartisan effort, they will grant us a hearing.

Best regards,

Sharon D. Hubberman
