PERTH AMBOY – On 8/25/15 Mayor Wilda Diaz held a brunch at Seabra’s Armory recognizing the anniversary of the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote. Local women business owners, their employees, city employees and women well known in the community attended the complementary brunch.

Diaz introduced her newly appointed Acting City Attorney, Arlene Quinones Perez as the keynote speaker.

Perez spoke about her experiences in the male dominated fields of law and politics. She considers herself both a lawyer and a politician. She stated that sometimes women challenge the credentials of other women more than their male counterparts. She said, “Hillary Clinton – love her or hate her – she’s qualified to be President.”

Quinones emphasized the need for women to be supportive of other women who are vying for jobs or political offices. By being supportive, you help women in the future have less difficulties.

Pink Ribbon Gala Committee Chair Elaine Jasko and Junel Hutchinson (both who are cancer survivors) spoke about the Pink Ribbon Gala to be held Saturday, October 10 on the Cornucopia “St. Charles Vessel,” which is raising money for Mary’s Place by the Sea located in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. Mary’s Place is a retreat for women who are undergoing cancer treatment. They can relax and participate in different activities. There are programs where they can learn about nutrition, have healthy meals prepared for them, massages and weekend lodging. These services are supplied for free. Mary’s Place is a 501c3 and has been recognized throughout the state for their work. See Page 8 for more information.
